He was an ornithologist but secretly he smuggled black slaves from plantations in the "deep south" of America to the safety and freedom of Canada, where he was born. He was a major abolitionist and was even recognised by Abraham Lincoln. He is featured in the book "Underground to Canada" which is a fictional story based on truth where two slave girls escape to Canada on the Underground Raliway sysytem with a lot of help from Mr Ross and Levi Coffin, who is another Abolitionist.
