Ken: Glossop is a real Harrop stronghold - there were Harrops who were mayors etc. Outside of Glossop there is Castle Hill and Harrops have traditionally farmed the land there, notably at Hilltop http://www.darkpeakhistory.com/castlehill.html
Castle Hill has old mound fortifications and you can feel the history there. Glossop itself was set up around AD 600 after the Romans left Britain. Originally Glot's Hop. There's a heritage center in Glossop with very nice people. The Glossop Harrops are the same family as the Saddleworth Harrops - in fact all Harrops are pretty much related. Glossop and Saddleworth seem to be two concentration points of the Harrops.
All the best
Mike
