I finally hit info for Peter TRAUTMAN b. 1856 on the 1880 Census of Tazewell County. They are in Pekin Twp. All born in Hesse-Darmstadt. Was able to verify that this Peter is my GG-Grandfather from previous info:

I was able to get a copy of Peter's naturalization record filed 1903 which led me to the passager index in Germans to America yesterday containing same info for family members that are here in 1880. They immigrated from port of Bremen and arrived NY 11 Mar. 1872. Father is Joh. (Johann?)TRAUTMANN. Catharine is widowed by 1880. Although it is the same family on the index and census...Peter age differs by 7 years..he is listed on the index as age 09 with a birth date est. of 1863 rather than 1856. In 1880 and 1900 census he is consistant with 1856, as well as on his naturalization record.
Do you think we have a Darmstadt TRAUTMAN connection here?
