I'm from the South of Ireland. My name is very rare in Ireland. They're less than 10 families in the country. Seven years ago I was in a shopping center in Dublin and there was a guy who was selling books on Irish family names. So I looked up the word Hegney. There wasn't very much information but I found something very interesting. And it read: the name Hegney came from a family called the Healy's who in the 15th century had a family feud therefore split into several families ( Hegney, Healy, Henney, Hegarty, Heagney, etc ).
