: i want to know if this surname exists outside staffordshire, england or if anyone knows its origin or meaning.

In my research on the Seabridge line I came accross an explanation of the name. It seems that in the part of Staffordshire that the family came from, there was a river or stream which had bridges over it at various points. There was one bridge that was used to move sheep from one side to the other for grazing. The bridge was know originally as the Sheep Bridge. Over the years the name lost it's original meaning and due to local accents and the normal changes time brings, it came down to Seabridge as we now know it. I have the article someplace I think. It goes into more detail but you get the idea.

btw If any of you are interested there is a forum for the Seabridge family at: http://genforum.genealogy.com/seabridge/

You might find it interesting.

My line comes from the N J Seabridge family. Our immigrant ancestor was William who came to the US in 1849. Peter, who was mentioned in another post came earlier. I have not found the connection yet but I am sure they were all related.
