I am looking for information on my husband's great grandfather who was believed to have been born in Switzerland, we don't know the year, or when he left that country. He was 15 or 16 years old, when he got mad because his 2 old maid sisters would not turn over his inheriance, which was said to be quite large, it was said he stowed away on a ship never to see or have any contact with is family again. The name Frederick Whieland appears on the civil war muster roll, the last name Weilan also appears in another box on the same document. So the last name Weilan maybe his name when he was born in Switzerland, but on his widow's civil war pension record his name is spelled Friedrich Wieland. It appears that the spelling of the first and last name was changed. We know he served in the american civil war, married a divorced woman, who's name was Parthena Greenhouse, Possey being her maiden name. She had one child by Mr. Greenhouse, named George, she had a child by Mr. Wieland who's name was William Walter Wheeland, so the name was changed again, from Wieland to Wheeland. We don't know the year he died but his widow, Parthena put in for his pension in 1907. We would like any information we could find out about him and his family, when he lived in Switzerland. So the spelling of his name could have been Friedrich Weilan in Switzerland, changed to Frederick fom Friedrich Wieland after he came to the USA.
