Hello out there!!! I'm not sure if we are looking for (or finding, for that matter) the right Woodwards...but I thought I'd launch a little info to see if I could help someone else and/or myself make any exciting genealogical discoveries! My great-grandfather was William (Buster)Blair Woodward, born (I think) in Saltville, VA. He was born (I am sure) on Aug. 11, 1909 and died June of 1988. He married Eva Pearl Maiden, also from (but not born in) Saltville, VA (born 2-20-1912, died 4-12-1992). Buster's daddy was John H. (Hascal or Hackley--not sure which???) Woodward, (b. 1-11-1858, d. 12-26-1936)who married Sally Henderson (b. 10-27-1859, d. 12-20-1892, aged 33 at her death)and had 6 children: Ellen, Guy, Lizzie, Thomas, Harry, and Sallie. In 1893, on May 11, John remarried, this time to Margaret Ann Jackson (b. 5-13-1875, d. 3-4-1962), who bore him 4 children, my "Big Pap" being the youngest of the bunch: Gus, Daniel, Susie, and Willie B. (Buster). John Woodward's father supposedly came from England to settle here in America, sometime around the beginning of the trail of tears (?)...not sure of dates at this moment...before the Civil War. His name was Eastridge. Upon his settling in the deep, rolling hills of Virginia, he stole a very young (10-12 yrs, old) Native American girl to be his wife; she was Soiux, my great-grandfather said. Eastridge named her Louise; the rest of the family called her "Weezy". The only things Big Pap recalled about her was that, when not cooking, she sat silently on the front porch in an old rocking chair smoking her pipe. He said she always looked little and scared. Eastridge was not known as a very nice man; he fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War...I have yet to try and look him up through military records of that time. I have the name of tha valley he lived in, "Poor
Valley" (somewhere near Saltville, VA) Where the name Woodward came from??? Maybe Eastridge is further back, but that is what I gather from my notes. One more thing, about Big Pap's mom...Margaret Ann Jackson claimed that General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, CS, was her uncle. Other than that testimony, I have no proof...this is merely the beginning of my search (and literally the FIRST e-mail I have launched..ha!), hopefully it is not the end. I only hope that I can help someone else in some way, but then I guess that would make us cousins, or something, wouldn't it!?! Once again, on a serious note, I do have more info on more recent generations and on my great-grandmother, Eva Pearl Maiden's side. Please e-mail for any help and please help me if you have any info! Thanks a million!!! ...Hey, we're all brothers anyway!!!
